02/15/2009 - Charlottesville, VA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 12th-ranked Clemson Tigers have clinched their third 20-win season in a row for the first time in school history, and they will attempt to improve their already impressive record in today's ACC clash with the slumping Virginia Cavaliers.
Clemson has won four of its last five games, including an 87-77 road win over Boston College on Tuesday. The Tigers are 20-3 overall, including 6-3 in conference action, and they carry an impressive 6-1 record in true road games into this afternoon's affair. While an NCAA Tournament berth figures to be a lock at this point, Clemson is fighting for positioning in the "Big Dance".
Virginia has suffered eight consecutive defeats to plummet to 7-13 overall, so postseason play isn't on the minds of the Cavaliers. They fell to 1-8 in conference action with a 68-57 loss to Florida State on Tuesday.
While Virginia owns a 64-49 series advantage over Clemson, the Tigers have won two of the last three meetings.
Clemson is scoring 78.5 ppg this season while allowing 65.3 ppg to opponents on 41.3 percent shooting from the floor. Trevor Booker leads a trio of double- digit scorers for the Tigers with 15.1 ppg, and he is also tops with 9.0 rpg and 54 blocks, numbers that figure to earn Booker some All-ACC consideration. K.C. Rivers provides 14.3 ppg, and Terrence Oglesby checks in with 13.4 ppg. The Tigers are generating 78.5 ppg while limiting opponents to 65.3 ppg on 41.3 percent field goal efficiency. All five starters reached double figures in scoring for Clemson in the 10-point victory over Boston College last time out. The Tigers did not dominate any one aspect of the tilt, but they simply played solid ball across the board. Oglesby led the way offensively with 21 points and six assists, while Booker added 21 points as well to go along with 13 rebounds.
In the 11-point loss to Florida State, Virginia only connected on 34.3 percent of its field goal attempts and finished with nine assists against 14 turnovers. The Cavaliers, who were 7-of-27 from three-point range, were outscored 13-4 from the foul line, and all of the negatives overshadowed a 42-30 rebounding disadvantage. Freshman standout Sylven Landesberg tallied 14 points in defeat, although his 6-of-19 shooting effort was a bit disappointing. Through 20 games, Landesberg is scoring 17.8 ppg to pace the squad. Mike Scott adds 10.4 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer on the roster for Virginia, which has lost by double figures in six of the last seven outings.
